Ammonia is composed of nitrogen and hydrogen (NH3). In an Aquaponics system fish are the primary producers of Ammonia. Ammonia is essential to stimulate the production of nitrites and nitrates.

When doing a fish-less cycle of an Aquaponics system you will add small doses of Ammonia in order to increase the benefical bacteria which will then produce nitrites and nitrates.
